Frenectomy

What is Frenectomy ?

A frenectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal or modification of a frenulum, which is a small fold of tissue in the mouth that connects two structures.

What is a Tounge Tie ?

A Tongue tie or ankyloglossia occurs when there is an abnormal band of thick tissue (frenum), which is located below the Tongue.

What is a Lip Tie ?

When the upper lip is lifted and the band of connective tissue (frenum) is
tight, causing the gums to turn white, it is known as upper lip tie. It ranges
from mild to severe.

WHAT OTHER PROBLEMS CAN ARISE FROM HAVING A TONGUE TIE & LIP TIE?

  • A lip-tie limits the lip movement.
  • A tongue-tie limits your tongue’s range of motion.
  • Diastema (a gap between your front teeth), which may be aesthetically unpleasing.
  • Gum recession, which can lead to gum disease and tooth mobility.
  • Pain, swelling or tenderness with brushing or oral care.
  • Malocclusion (crooked teeth).

HOW TO CORRECT THE LIP AND TONGUE TIE?

  • LINGUAL FRENECTOMY: This procedure removes or modifies the band of tissue that connects the underside of your tongue to the floor of your mouth. Lingual frenectomies are used to correct tongue-ties.
  • LABIAL FRENECTOMY: Sometimes called a maxillary frenectomy, this procedure removes the band of tissue that connects your upper gums to your front teeth. Labial frenectomies are used to correct lip-ties. Labial frenectomies can be performed on the lower lip too.

Advantages of Frenectomy Procedure

  • Improved speech through enhanced tongue movement and flexibility.
  • Improved breastfeeding in infants by addressing tongue tie issues.
  • Prevention or alleviation of orthodontic problems, such as spacing between front teeth.
  • Increased range of tongue movement for better articulation of sounds.
  • Reduced gum recession risk by preventing excessive tension on the gums.
  • Enhanced oral hygiene with better access for toothbrushing and flossing.
  • Minimally invasive procedure often leading to reduced discomfort.

HOW THE TREATMENT IS PERFORMED?

  1. LASER TREATMENT: With using a laser, there is less pain, less bleeding and no need for sutures.  This leads to fast healing and quick resolution to the problem.  This form of treatment usually requires using just a local anaesthetic.
  2. Anaesthesia followed by incision with scalpel blade.
